Porters Hill Park in Batford is the place to start with a toddler. Oakley Road in Southdown is the fenced, smaller alternative, and the best-known park is not necessarily the best fit for the very young.

Porters Hill is the one playground where the council's own page describes a separate toddler area.

If you have a toddler in Harpenden, start at Porters Hill Park in Batford. Harpenden Town Council's page for the park lists a toddler play area, alongside a natural play area for older children. Oakley Road in Southdown is the smaller, fenced alternative, with toddler rockers.

This guide covers the play spaces in Harpenden, Southdown and Batford that we could check against Harpenden Town Council's pages or Hertfordshire County Council's directory. We checked the council pages on 18 October 2026; the county directory entry is dated 19 June 2026. The council pages carry no dates, so equipment may have changed since they were written. It is worth a look at the council's page, or a call, before a special trip.

Porters Hill Park, Batford

Where: off Pickford Hill, Batford, Harpenden. Run by: Harpenden Town Council. Council page

The natural play area has a zip-wire, a basket swing, a slide and a wooden climbing frame, and the council lists a toddler play area as well. That makes it a good bet if you have a walking toddler and an older child to keep busy.

The park is open to the public at all times. The council says it has re-laid the paths around the play area to make them more accessible, which should help with a buggy.

Parking is free but small: about four or five cars. Go early, or walk.

Oakley Road Play Area, Southdown

Where: Oakley Road, Southdown, Harpenden. Run by: Harpenden Town Council, which acquired the site in 2022. Council page

This looks the one for a short, contained visit. The site is fenced and covers just over half an acre. The council lists wooden play equipment: slides, swings, a large boat climbing structure, a basket swing and toddler rockers.

The page gives no age range. The Town Council's number is 01582 768278 if you want to ask.

Woodend Play Area, Carpenders Close

Where: Carpenders Close, Harpenden. Run by: Harpenden Town Council, which acquired the site in 2022. Council page

This is outside Southdown and Batford, but it earns a place because the council gives it a stated age range of 0 to 12, which covers a baby, a toddler and a school-age sibling in one trip. It has a nature theme, a zip wire and a sensory planting area.

Parking is on the road only.

Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve play park, Batford

Where: Lower Luton Road, Batford, Harpenden. Council page

The council describes a play park with apparatus suited to children up to 13. Its page does not mention toddler equipment, so treat this as one for a family with older children, or as a first-visit gamble with an under-five.

Rothamsted Park play area, Leyton Road

Where: Leyton Road, Harpenden. Hertfordshire County Council directory

The county directory lists the play area as free, with inclusive play panels and musical instruments. The park is also home to the leisure centre and the Eric Morecambe Centre, so it may be easy to combine with a swim or a show. The directory does not mention toddler equipment, whereas the council pages for Porters Hill and Oakley Road do.

How to choose

A walking toddler: Porters Hill, which the council lists with a toddler area. Allow for the small car park.

A short outing in Southdown: Oakley Road. The fence and the toddler rockers do the work.

A baby, a toddler and an older child together: Woodend, which the council gives as 0 to 12.

Inclusive play, or a day that includes a swim or a show: Rothamsted Park.

For toilets, cafés and surfacing at any of these, the Town Council can be reached on 01582 768278.
