Harpenden has two pools for baby swimming. Nobody tells you

Ask where to take a baby swimming in Harpenden and the answer that comes back is usually somewhere else: St Albans, Markyate, Hemel Hempstead. The two national brands parents know by name confirm it. Puddle Ducks' West Hertfordshire team lists Luton, Dunstable, St Albans, Hemel Hempstead, Welwyn and Milton Keynes, and no Harpenden venue at all; a local directory lists Water Babies' Hertfordshire pools at Markyate and St Albans. Yet two pools within the town take babies and toddlers in the water every week, and one of them starts at four months.

Harpenden Leisure Centre, Leyton Road

The centre has a 25-metre main pool and a smaller teaching pool, and it is the teaching pool that matters for a first lesson: shallower, warmer, and not shared with lane swimmers.

Lessons are run by Everyone Active, which operates the centre, under the Swim England Learn to Swim framework. They begin at four months old and run 50 weeks of the year, seven days a week, which is the strongest argument for booking here: the term does not stop every few weeks and start again with a new waiting list.

Price on enquiry. Harpenden-specific pricing for baby and toddler lessons could not be confirmed from the operator's own site or booking system when we checked. Ring the centre before you plan a budget.

Stevie's Swim School, Aldwickbury School Pool

Stevie's Swim School runs at Aldwickbury School's 25-metre pool, at weekends only: Saturday from 8.30am to noon, and Sunday from 8.30am to 3.30pm, with a further Sunday session from 1pm to 3.30pm being trialled. That is the guide's most useful line for working parents — this is a weekend programme in a school pool, not a weekday leisure-centre one.

Ages and prices are not published on the operator's own site. A local directory describes the programme as taking children from a few weeks old up to six, which is indicative rather than confirmed; ask directly what the youngest group is before you assume a newborn has a place.

Baby Loves Swimming

The smallest of the three, and the least documented. A directory listing places it in a warm private pool in Harpenden on Wednesday and Friday mornings, 9am to noon, in groups of no more than four, for babies and toddlers from around three months to four years, at £90 for a five-week course. The operator's own websites were not loading when we checked on 7 September, so those details come from the listing rather than from the provider. Worth a call before booking, and worth it if a group of four in a small warm pool is what you want; that is a different proposition from a 25-metre municipal pool on a Saturday.

If you do travel

The directory lists Water Babies' nearest Hertfordshire pools as Markyate and St Albans. Puddle Ducks' nearest is St Albans. Both are a drive, and neither publishes a Harpenden option.

How to choose

For a first set of lessons with a baby under a year, Harpenden Leisure Centre is the obvious first call: teaching pool, national syllabus, and classes that run almost every week of the year. For a walking toddler in a household where weekdays are impossible, Aldwickbury is the one to chase, and the new Sunday afternoon slot is the newest capacity in town. For a nervous parent who wants three other families and nothing else in the water, the private pool is the one to ring.

The gap is the same in all three cases: none of them tells a parent plainly what a term costs. A leisure centre that publishes its opening hours to the minute and its lesson prices nowhere is making a choice, and it is not one that helps a parent deciding in September. The question for all three is simple enough to answer in a line on a webpage: what does a term cost, and does membership change it?
