Kangaroo Club has been running on Vaughan Road for more than forty years, which in the world of toddler groups is close to a dynasty.
The cheapest morning out with a baby in Harpenden is also one of the best. Baby Rhyme Time at the library on the High Street costs nothing, needs no booking, lasts half an hour, and if it goes badly you have lost nothing but the walk. That is the shape of under-fives provision here: Harpenden is unusually well served by cheap, informal groups run out of church halls, and a parent new to the town can fill most of a week for the price of a coffee.
This guide covers baby and toddler groups, classes and lessons in Harpenden, Batford and Southdown, plus the nearest baby swimming. The community drop-ins mostly publish their days and prices and expect you to turn up. The franchise classes — sensory, movement and dance — publish ages and days but not always the current term's cost, so they are the ones to phone rather than book blind. Everything below was checked on 7 September 2026. Term-time groups pause for school holidays.
Baby Rhyme Time, Harpenden Library
27 High Street. Thursdays, 10.00–10.30am and 11.30am–12.00pm. Free, donations welcome. No booking. Babies and young children. The easiest first outing with a newborn.
Baby Group Little Herts, Southdown Family Centre
Dark Lane, Southdown. Tuesdays, 1.00–2.30pm, term-time. Ages 0–1. £1.50 per family, drop-in. Phone 0300 123 7572. An afternoon slot, which is rarer than it sounds — almost everything else here happens before lunch.
Batford Butterflies
Batford Methodist Church, Lower Luton Road. Mondays, 9.30–11.00am. Price on enquiry.
Building Blocks Stay & Play
High Street Methodist Church. Thursdays, 9.30–11.00am. £2 per family, drop-in.
Busy Bunnies
All Saints Church Hall, 129 Station Road, Batford. Thursdays, 9.30–11.30am. £1.50 per adult and child, plus 50p per additional child. Drop-in. Two hours, which suits a toddler who takes twenty minutes to commit to a room.
Kangaroo Club
United Reformed Church Hall, Vaughan Road. Fridays, 10.00–11.15am. It has been running for more than forty years, which in the world of toddler groups is close to a dynasty.
Little Acorns
St John's Church Hall, St John's Road. Tuesdays, 10.00–11.30am. £2 voluntary donation, drop-in.
Little Fishes
Crabtree Church, 139 Crabtree Lane. Thursdays, 9.30–11.00am. £1.50 per family, drop-in.
MaMites
Christchurch Harpenden, 4 Vaughan Road. Fridays, 10.00–11.30am. £2 per family per week, drop-in.
Baby Roo's
United Reformed Church, Vaughan Road. Tuesdays, 10.30–11.45am. Ages 0–2. Booking required; price on enquiry. The narrower age band makes it a gentler room than the general toddler groups.
Baby Sensory St Albans & Harpenden
High Street Methodist Church. Mondays, in three age bands: 9.20–10.10am for six to 13 months, 10.35–11.25am for birth to seven months, and 11.50am–12.40pm for birth to 13 months. Book through the Baby Sensory St Albans & Harpenden listing, and ask for the term cost, not the per-session rate.
Toddler Sense St Albans & Harpenden
Classes run in Harpenden on Wednesdays and Thursdays for ages 13 months to five years. Check the operator's St Albans page for the venue, times and price. The natural next step when a walking toddler has outgrown sitting still.
Tappy Toes
Dance for ages six months to six years, taught locally by Miss Olivia. The St Albans and Harpenden page carries the venue, day and price.
Baby and toddler swimming: Westminster Lodge, St Albans
The nearest public pool running adult-and-child lessons, in two bands: four to 18 months, and 19 to 36 months. Times and current prices are on the centre's booking pages. It means a drive, and there is no equivalent in Harpenden itself.
How to choose
Start free and start local. The library on a Thursday, or whichever church hall is closest to your front door, will tell you more in one morning than any amount of comparing timetables. Thursday is the busiest day of the week for under-fives here — Building Blocks, Busy Bunnies and Little Fishes all run at once, plus both rhyme times — so if a room feels too full, come back on a Tuesday. Batford is well covered on Mondays and Thursdays, which matters if the alternative is crossing the Lower Luton Road with a buggy. Save the paid sensory and movement classes for when you know what your baby actually enjoys, and ask for the full term price before you commit.
The verdict on Harpenden is a good one: a dense, cheap network of groups held together by church halls and volunteers, several of them older than the parents now using them. The gap is water. For a town this size to send its babies to St Albans for their first swimming lesson is a small, persistent inconvenience, and the obvious question is whether anyone with a pool in Harpenden could open an hour a week to under-threes.
