Baby Rhyme Time runs on Thursday mornings in two sittings, 10am to 10.30am and 11.30am to noon. Free, with donations welcomed. This is the one for the pre-walking end: songs, actions, and a room full of people in the same boat.
Storytime runs every Tuesday, 2.15pm to 2.45pm, and keeps going through the school holidays. For new books and presents, this is the obvious first stop.
Oxfam Books & Music, 5 Harding Parade
Phone 01582 762840. Second-hand books and music, and by the shop's own account a particularly strong children's section. This is the cheap way to fill a bookcase, and the sort of shop where a regular look beats one big visit. Hours are not published online and the shop asks you to call ahead, which is a small nuisance if you are planning a trip around a nap.
How to choose
If you do one thing this week, do Thursday morning at the library: it is free, it is twice in one morning so a bad night need not write it off, and nothing else in town offers it. Buy new at Harpenden Books, browse cheap at Oxfam, and use the library for volume.
The library carries most of the weight here, and it does it for nothing. The gap worth filling is a regular story session on the High Street itself, so that buying books and being read to could happen in the same hour. That is a question for Harpenden Books.
