Toddler groups in Harpenden, day by day

Harpenden's toddler week is run, in the main, out of church halls, and is the better for it. The United Reformed Church on Vaughan Road keeps two of the town's steadiest sessions going through term time; the Methodist church on the High Street takes Monday; Musicale on Sun Lane has half an hour of music on a Wednesday; and Toddler Sense runs twice over, midweek. The commercial classes cost around £12 a session. The church ones ask for a small fee and give you a cup of tea.

What Harpenden does not have is anywhere to take a one-year-old on a wet Tuesday with nothing booked. Big Space closed permanently in December 2019, and the town has been without indoor soft play since.

Monday — Baby Sensory, Harpenden Methodist Church

High Street, Harpenden. The St Albans franchise runs its Harpenden classes on Mondays, with its St Albans days midweek. Its last published price was £12.50 a class, or £11.50 a class booked for the full term. Start times sit inside the booking system rather than on the class page, so check and book through Baby Sensory's own site.

Tuesday — Baby Roo's, Harpenden United Reformed Church

Vaughan Road, Harpenden. Tuesday mornings, 10.30 to 11.45, in term time, for newborns up to pre-walkers with a parent or carer. A small fee per family, refreshments included; contact the church office. This is the one to start with if you are on maternity leave and want company rather than a curriculum.

Wednesday — Tappy Toes at Musicale

Homecroft, Sun Lane, Harpenden. Wednesdays, 10.15 to 10.45. Thirty minutes is the right length for a one-year-old and about twenty-five minutes longer than most of them will sit still for. Ages and price are not given on the listing, so ask when you book.

Wednesday and Thursday — Toddler Sense

For children from 13 months to five years, on both days. The most structured thing on this list, and it suits a child who has been walking a while rather than a baby. The venue and the exact class times are not on the page that confirms the days; book through Toddler Sense's own site. Its most recently published price, for the summer term, was £80 for an eight-week block or £12.50 pay-as-you-go, which may since have moved.

Friday — Kangaroo Club, Harpenden United Reformed Church

Vaughan Road, Harpenden. Friday mornings, 10 to 11.15, in term time, for ages one to four with a parent or carer. A small fee per session, refreshments included. This is where Baby Roo's graduates go once they are on their feet, and it ends the week in the same hall it began in.

Any day — Harpenden Library

27 High Street. Free, and open until 7pm on Thursdays, which is later than anything else here. The county's page for a Thursday rhyme time here does not load, so ask at the desk before you set out for one.

How to choose

If you are new to the town and picking one thing, make it a church hall: they cost least, run to the school term and do not need a block booking. If you want a class with a programme and props, Baby Sensory on Monday for the very small and Toddler Sense midweek for the walking. Between them, the week is covered from Monday to Friday morning — and it is mornings, all of it. The gap is the wet afternoon with nothing booked, and no session on this list fills it.
